A couple of months after moving to Zagreb, I decided to organize a clothing swap party. I was nervous – new city, barely knew anyone, and I wasn’t sure if anyone would show up.

But it turned out to be an incredible success! Lots of people came, it was super fun, and we all left with cute, free clothes. 🌱

If you’re interested in hosting your own clothing swap event, this step-by-step guide will walk you through everything you need to know – from preparation to promotion to clean-up.

Whether it’s your first time or you want to improve your next swap, this guide has you covered.

Let’s begin!

How Does a Clothing Swap Party Work?

A clothing swap party is a fun, eco-friendly event where people exchange gently used clothes and accessories.

Instead of buying new items or throwing away what you no longer wear, you give your clothes a new life, and pick up something new for yourself.

It’s sustainable, budget-friendly, and fun! Here’s how it works:

  1. Declutter your closet and bring clean, good-condition clothes that you no longer want.
  2. Clothes are laid out or hung up for browsing.
  3. Participants take what they like, for free.
  4. Leftovers can be saved for another event or donated.

Clothing swap rules

To make the swap smooth and fair, it’s important to set a few guidelines:

  1. Item limit – Ask attendees to bring a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 20 items. Quality over quantity is key. At my event, one woman showed up with a full suitcase of old, low-quality clothes. Oops. That one was on me; I hadn’t clearly stated a maximum item count.
  2. Condition check – Accept only clean and wearable items. No stains, holes, broken zippers, or smells.
  3. What to bring – Besides clothing, allow shoes, accessories, bags, hats, etc. It can be a “bring anything you want” swap party or make it specific for kids’ items, clothing, books, Christmas stuff, kitchen tools, beauty items, accessories, etc.
  4. Bring a reusable bag – Encourage eco-friendliness.
  5. First come, first served – Whoever finds it first, keeps it.
  6. Be mindful – Take only what you love and will wear. The goal is to declutter, not re-clutter.
  7. Set a time & date – Consider a date and time when most people will be available. I organized my Clothing swap party on a Sunday from 10:00 until 14:00.

Modify the rules to fit your event. 🙂

How to host a Clothing Swap party:

Step 1: Choose a location

Decide if you want a small or large event:

  • Small event (5–10 people): Host at home. You just need enough space, some hangers, and maybe a mirror.
  • Larger event: Reach out to local cafés, community centers, non-profits, or even yoga studios. I personally reached out to a few favorite cafés—one happily agreed to host!

Pro tip: Provide a changing area (even a bathroom works), mirrors, and clothing racks.

For my event, we used lots of hangers and a clothing rack, which worked great. However, we didn’t have enough mirrors. It wasn’t a deal breaker, but it’s definitely something I’ll plan for more carefully next time. A few well-placed mirrors can improve the experience.

Step 2: Set a date & create the event

Pick a date when most people are free (weekends are great). I hosted mine on a Sunday from 10 AM–2 PM, which worked well.

I created a Facebook event and shared it in local Facebook groups. You can create an event on Facebook or use any of the following sites and make a free invitation:

Promote it at least 1–2 weeks in advance, especially if you want a good turnout. Include important details like date, time, what to bring, and the clothing swap rules (below).

Don’t forget to write down the clothing swap rules in there.

Step 3: Set up & start the clothing swap party

On the day of the swap:

  • Set up tables or racks to display clothing.
  • Encourage people to hang or fold their items.
  • Greet attendees and explain how it works.

I also reminded everyone to take only what they genuinely needed. That helped keep the vibe conscious and generous.

Step 4: Have a plan for leftover clothes

There will always be leftovers. Don’t let them go to waste! You can:

  • Save for the next swap.
  • Donate to local shelters or charities. We decided to donate the leftover clothing and found places that accept donations in advance.

Make sure you have transportation arranged if you expect a lot of extras.

Benefits of a Clothing Swap party:

  • Free clothes – It is like shopping without spending money since you will get “new” free clothes.
  • Eco-friendlyThe fashion industry is a huge waste generator. A clothing swap helps to reduce fashion waste and extend the life of garments.
  • Meet people – Hosting one helped me connect with amazing people in a new city.
  • Mindful declutter – It feels great to clear out clothes you no longer wear and know they’ll be appreciated.
  • Instant feedback – It’s fun trying on clothes with a group and getting real-time opinions.
  • Inclusivity – People of all sizes and styles can find something that fits and flatters.
  • Budget-friendly – Great for anyone who wants to save money while satisfying their consumerism 😀

Swap clothes online: Best clothing swap apps

Can’t host or attend a local event? No problem! There are plenty of clothing swap apps that let you swap clothes online:

  1. Rehash – Swap your clothes online and join eco-friendly style communities.
  2. TradeMade – A swap, trade & barter app for clothing.
  3. Swopped – UK-based online clothes swapping app.
  4. Depop – While it is mainly for selling/buying clothes, many people are open to swaps, too. Before approaching a seller for an exchange, check their bio, as many people explicitly state ‘No swaps’ or ‘Open to swaps.’
  5. Vinted – Vinted is a peer-to-peer marketplace for selling, buying, and swapping clothes.

These clothing swap apps are perfect if you’re short on time, live in a remote area, or just prefer online exchanges.

Final thoughts

Hosting a clothing swap party is fun, budget-friendly, and impactful for both people and the planet.

The one I organized helped me make friends and build community in a city where I barely knew anyone. It doesn’t take much to get started – just a little planning, a few simple rules, and an open heart.

  2. Hi Meri,
I did this swap with 20 women and it was GREAT fun! Everyone went home with a bag of clothes and had an afternoon of fun (and food) together. Now everyone is asking, “when are we going to do that again?”
